At Wiedewei we celebrate 'Vegetable Garden Month' in March

Published March 28, 2024

At Wiedewei it's all about being outside and discovering nature. This is even more central in March, because then it is 'Vegetable Garden Month'! During this month your child will do all kinds of activities focused on the theme 'vegetable garden'. In this way, your child learns about nature in a playful way together with friends and develop skills such as motor skills and language.

Language development with word cards related to the vegetable garden

During the 'Vegetable Garden Month' the children do activities in which they learn in all kinds of areas, including language. For example, the pedagogical professionals of Wiedewei Ridderkerk create word cards related to the theme 'vegetable garden'. They link the words on the cards to what your child sees, does and experiences. If the word 'rake' is on a word card, the children will actually rake in the garden that day. This way, children better understand what the word means and can remember it more easily. In this way, the vegetable garden month also contributes to language development. A development goal that Wiedewei finds very important.

Reenact garden center to learn new words and actions

The children not only experience nature outside, but also bring nature inside. For example, the corner of the house of Wiedewei Ridderkerk has been transformed into a garden center. The garden center consists of a shop, an area for potting plants and a coffee corner. Your child will learn what it is like to go to the store, buy a plant and what is involved. In addition, your child will learn new words related to plants, a garden center and the vegetable garden.

Learning to remember, recognize colors and count

For cognitive development, such as thinking, fantasy and memory, the children play theme-related memory. With flowers with leaves of different colors and pegs in the same color, children learn to recognize colors and develop their fine motor skills. This means making small and delicate movements, such as grabbing something, writing or pointing.

Have fun in the vegetable garden and develop a love for nature at a young age

In addition to all these activities, Vegetable Garden Month also means; having fun in the vegetable garden. The children help with everything and are amazed by everything that grows and blooms. They find corn, sunflowers, blackberries, flowers, an apple and pear tree, lemon balm, tomato, carrot and pick lettuce. And worms. The children learn that worms are good in your garden because that means the soil is healthy and fertile. This way, all fruit and vegetables grow extra well! The children go on an adventure and discover a lot. In this way, they develop a love for nature at an early age and learn where the food on their plates comes from.
