Party time at Wiedewei Dirksland! Last Thursday, alderman Petra 't Hoen of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee opened the new discovery garden there. The garden has been transformed into a green and sustainable playground in recent weeks. A radiant sun, 28 degrees and a refreshing breeze completed the festive atmosphere at the opening.
The green garden: a valuable concept
The alderman opened the garden in the presence of the pedagogical professionals, children, parents, grandparents and interested neighbours. “The green and sustainable concept of Wiedewei is very valuable. It is so important that future generations grow up healthy and with an eye for nature,” said alderman 't Hoen. At that moment a toddler enthusiastically pointed to the ground “An ant! Look, an ant!”, he shouted, interrupting the alderman. “That's what we do it all for!” alderman 't Hoen replied laughing. After more beautiful words, the alderman, together with three toddlers, cut the ribbon around the fence. With that, the garden was officially opened.

Not everything was better in the past
After the official part it was time for those present to to go on a discovery. The toddlers couldn't wait to show their relatives the new garden. The expensivethe not long before the sandbox sat full and there stbelow a line to climb over the tree trunk. The neighbors too were very impressed with the new discovergarden. “The children to play outside a lot. It's fun to that now to take a closer look”, tellthe a neighbor. “And the garden turned out beautifully. I had An garden if this also found it fantastic in the past to play in!”

An educational playground
In recent weeks, the garden has been transformed into a natural playground made of sustainable materials and natural elements. The children practice their balance on the wooden tree trunks and wooden stepping stones, and the large sandpit and outdoor kitchen stimulate their creativity, motor skills and social skills. In the vegetable garden, the children are allowed to grow their own vegetables and fruit. This way, they learn where food comes from, how plants grow and that patience is an important part of it. Tiles have made way for even more grass, which is not only good for drainage and cooling, but – just like the barefoot path – stimulates the senses. The new discovery garden is therefore not only a place to play, but also to learn, discover and strengthen the connection with nature.
