During the National Bee Count from April 16 to 20, everything at Wiedewei Puttershoek revolved entirely around bees. Together with 83-year-old local beekeeper Henk, the children were introduced to the fascinating world of bees and the importance of these insects to nature through play. A scavenger hunt was also on the program, because, of course, bees had to be counted.
The fascinating world of bees
Beekeeper Henk took the children along in his story about bees, honey, and life in and around the beehive. He showed various materials, such as honeycombs and his beekeeper's suit with hood. The children were visibly curious and asked plenty of questions. For example, they wanted to know how bees find their way back to the beehive and why Beekeeper Henk does not wear protective clothing.
Developing language and social skills through play
Children are naturally curious, and beekeeper Henk's guest lesson aligned well with this. By listening, observing, and asking questions, they work on their broad development. They learn new words, discover how nature works, and gain a better understanding of the importance of bees to our environment. At the same time, they practice important skills such as waiting their turn, listening to each other, and engaging in conversation. This contributes to both their language development and their social-emotional development.
Searching for bees in the garden
After the guest lesson, it was time to go exploring on their own. In the garden, the children set to work on a bee scavenger hunt. Both toddlers and after-school care children joined in the search with great enthusiasm. No fewer than 94 bees were hidden, all of which were eventually found. By moving actively, searching purposefully, and working together, children develop their motor skills, concentration, and perseverance.
Growing up with love and respect for nature
Wiedewei focuses on childcare in and with nature, where children are given the space every day to play outside, discover, and learn from their surroundings. By aligning with current themes such as the National Bee Count, Wiedewei aims to make children aware of their living environment at a young age and actively involve them in nature. In this way, they grow up to be responsible young adults with love and respect for nature.
