We are so excited about this new month! Today is the start of the Month of the Vegetable Garden at Wiedewei! The whole of March is dedicated to our vegetable gardens. For four weeks we will experience and discover with the children how fun and educational vegetable gardening is. We will sow, plant and care, while we learn about nature and healthy food in a playful way.
Green fingers, great discoveries!
With our hands in the soil, we feel how nature works. We look at the colours and shapes of the plants, water them and discover which small animals live in our garden. We might even discover an earthworm in the soil or an early bee visiting a flower! Besides the fact that it is great fun to do this together, vegetable gardening is also very good for the development of young children. Below we list five reasons for you.
1️⃣ Sensory experience | Children discover nature with all their senses: feeling the earth, smelling fresh herbs, tasting home-grown vegetables and listening to the fluttering bees.
2️⃣ Promotes healthy eating habits | Seeing your own fruit and vegetables grow makes it much more fun to taste them! Children are often proud of what they have grown themselves and therefore eat more varied food.
3️⃣ Teaches responsibility | A vegetable garden needs care and attention. By watering and helping with the care, children learn that their actions are important and have consequences.
4️⃣ Stimulates patience and perseverance | A seed does not grow into a large plant in one day. Children learn that some things take time and that care and attention are eventually rewarded.
5️⃣ Connection with nature | By seeing up close how everything grows and works together, children learn how important it is to take good care of nature.
