Discovering together during the Wiedewei party in Willemstad

Published 22 October 2026

Swapping books, trying out new materials, and getting lost in a story together: during the Wiedewei party at Willemstad, one discovery followed another. Children, parents, and grandparents enjoyed a fun afternoon together at the location. There was plenty to experience!

Swap books and discover nature
Upon arrival, the children went exploring with their parent, grandparent, or guardian. At the book exchange market, they could look for an exciting or beautiful story to read at home. The children and parents brought books and received a stamp card in advance; for each book handed in, they were allowed to choose another book. Zand books were given a second life, and every family has 'new' reading material again. There were also items available for children to explore nature. In addition, everyone was introduced to the 'Uk & Puk' Early Childhood Education program, edition 2. The themes we will soon be working with provide even better support for the development of children's language, motor skills, and social-emotional development.

The tastiest creations
In between exploring, there was time to eat something tasty together. The children had made the most beautiful and delicious creations at home with their parents and brought them along. A pear had been transformed into a peacock, with delicious fruit skewers as feathers. Next to it lay watermelon figures and vegetable snacks with dips in surprising colors. It was so nice to see how much attention had been paid to this!

From story to game
A special moment was the visit by the reading consultant from the municipality of Moerdijk. Experiencing a story together makes children curious about what is going to happen and they discover new words. The consultant read aloud from We have a little goat.. Immediately afterwards, the children could watch the story digitally and participate in a game with the wheel. All the animals from the book appeared. In this way, the story continued in the game after the reading.

We look back on a wonderful and valuable afternoon of discovery, reading, trading, and enjoyment. It was lovely to welcome so many parents together with their children. There were also many oDads and grandmas are present. This is important, because for many children, they are part of the familiar circle around them. If they come along to Wiedewei, children can share their world with them here: show where they like to play, try something new together, and proudly tell what they can already do.

The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity to reflect together on our love for books, nature, and discovering the world around us.
